PRE-SESSION INTAKE AND FAQ
RECORDING SESSION FAQ
What if we have to cancel?
We get it. Sometimes things come up or someone gets sick. If you need to cancel, we won’t be mad. However, because our work starts far ahead of your session start time, we will need to charge the amount of your deposit regardless of the reason for cancellation or timing of the cancellation. To reschedule, you will need to submit a new deposit.
What time should we arrive to the session?
Please arrive at your scheduled start time. Ahead your session, the engineering team will be prepping for your arrival. You will have plenty of time to load in your gear and get settled in while your engineer is setting up mics and dialing in the gear.
Are we charged for set up?
Yes. All time that the engineer spends on your production is billable. In fact, besides your performance, set up time is the most important part of the entire session, as it determines the sonic quality of everything else down the line. Besides setting up microphones and gear being billable, editing, studio playback, rough mixes, and gear clean up are also part of the session time. We typically have a student intern available to assist with some of this. In every case, the staff engineer will be working hard to help you accomplish your goals for the session.
Where should we park/load in?
We are a storefront space on Lincoln Ave with paid meter parking on our block. That is the closest parking. If you can make it quick, you can temporarily stop in the alley behind the studio to load in before moving your vehicle. If you don’t have much gear or don’t want to pay for a meter, there is plenty of free parking if you circle the block around the studio (George St, Racine Ave, Diversey Pkwy, and Lakewood).
What if we end early?
On the occasion that we overestimated the time required for your recording session, you have a few options.
- You can record another song.
- You can add additional parts or detail layers to your recorded songs.
- You can take the time to do some critical listening in the studio.
- We can get into editing or mix-prep for your songs.
- You can experiment with different mix ideas with your engineer.
Please note that you are billed for all time scheduled, but we will not waste any of your time. There is always work to be done!
Is mixing "included"?
Mixing is not built into the price you pay for your recording session. Mixing is billed hourly, just like the recording session was.
Why do I need my songs mastered?
Mastering is the final stage of quality assurance and file preparation before your songs leave the studio. Mastering ensures that you songs meet similar loudness and tonal balance standards across the various songs that you recorded and ensure that the files are of the correct file type/resolution for your chosen distribution method.
